May 2015 Empties

Yep, you read that right. Between my insane work, obnoxious commute and the fact that that I recently found a few great books my poor blog is terribly neglected. I’m going to try to fix that. Lyn of Cheap As F started doing empties posts a few month ago, and I found them both entertaining and inspiring. I feel that they are a great way to do mini reviews for a bunch of stuff at once and just fun to write.
So here are my May empties.

Skin Care

Yes To Cucumbers Smoothing Body Wash (full size) – I bought this at the end of last year when I realized that winter is upon us, and I need moisturizing body wash. Unfortunately it was not as moisturizing as I hoped, which is why I managed to stretch it for so long. I’m not a fan of Yes To brand, as they use more gimmick in their marketing than I’m willing to tolerate. I bought this anyway, was I could use my Birchbox points on it and it was relatively cheap (by Birchbox standards anyway). It’s a decent body wash, especially during warmer months, but fake cucumber scent is not my favorite.
Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish (full size) – love this stuff. Full review here.
Proactiv Clarifying Night Cream (full size) – I used core Proaciv products for a few years (review). Once in a while I would try out there non-core stuff. One of the first retinol creams I tried. I really liked this stuff at first, but over the time my skin became more sensitive and I couldn’t use it along with benzoil peroxide products. So at the end I used this cream mostly on my neck.
L’Occitane Hand Cream (travel size) – I forgot why L’Occitane is prized for it’s hand creams. Now I remember. I started using it right after I finished one of Gilchrest & Somes Lotions (Birchbox sample), and, wow, what a difference. I may not be a biggest fan of how fragranced their products are or of their prices, but they do make great hand creams.
Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream – another Birchbox offering. I think it was deluxe sample, as it only lasted me about 3-4 weeks. I would expect full size to last longer. It was moisturizing, but did glorious nothing for my dark circles. Not that I really expected that it will…
Pur-lisse 4-in-1 (deluxe sample) – this is essentially cream cleanser. Since I love Liz Earle so much, I thought this will be just as great. It wasn’t. It did clean my face, but it was surprisingly drying to for cream cleanser.
Suki Exfoliating Foaming Cleanser (deluxe sample) – Nice lemon scented scrub. I went through two of these samples thoughtout last few months. Me like. TIP: if yours dried up to rock solid texture, just stir it up and it will crumble and become usable again. I used hairpin to do it.
Paula’s Choice Resist Anti-Aging Clear Skin Hydrator (full size) – This is one of the first Paula’s Choice products I tried, and I really like it. This is the second full size bottle I finished. It was my go to moisturizer during last winter, and I’ll probably buy it again. The only thing I don’t like about it as that it balls up and rolls if I touch my face within first 10-15 minutes after applying it.
Paula’s Choice Resist Super-Light Daily Wrinkle Defense SPF 30 (foil) – foil samples usually don’t give you enough information to decide if you like the product (or at least willing to try full size version) or not, but these is at least one exception from this rule – sunscreens. My main issues with sunscreen are greasiness/heaviness, smell (yes, they all smell, but some are particularly gross) and burning (especially around eyes). One application is usually enough to demine if any of these issues are present. In this case there weren’t. However, this product has a tint, which does a great job hiding white cast typical for physical sunscreens, but if it doesn’t match you skin tone you are out of luck. Which is a shame, because otherwise I liked it.

Hair Care

Wen Anti-Frizz Styling Cream (full size?) – there is still some product left, but I’ve come to accept that I’m not going to use it. So it was trashed. I’ve had it since my stint with Wen Hair Care, which was reviewed here. No w that I know more about co-wash, I believe that this product was part of the reason why my first attempt to switch to co-wash failed. Like many other styling products it contains silicone cyclopentasiloxane, which is not water soluble and I would need to use regular sulfate-containing shampoo to wash it out. Cleansing conditioner is just not enough. I believe that this what caused the build up, which lead me to write off my co-wash attempt as a failure. Why this product was part of the line focused on co-wash is beyond my comprehension. I’m not against silicones in general, but there are places they just don’t belong.
N4 Prep & Protect (deluxe sample) – This is essentially a leave-in conditioner spray. It did have mild moisturizing and detangling effect, but I really disliked the smell. Ironically enough I have two more of these from various subscription boxes.

Smashbox Lid Primer (travel size) – wow, I actually managed to finish makeup product before it went’ bad. The fact that it’s travel size probably helped with that. It worked ok to extend the lifetime of my eye shadows. It didn’t prevent creasing, but it’s saying much, as nothing prevents creasing on me. It’s not my favorite for two reasons. First, it sets really fast, like before I got a chance to blend it. Second, I feel that doe foot applicators are unhygienic.
Nanococo Lip Gloss in First Kiss (full size) – not really an “empty”, I just really didn’t like it. I’m not a fan of lip glosses, and sticky ones are just a big no. Plus, the color was not the most flattering. Since it has doe foot applicator and I used it on my lips I couldn’t give it away.
City Color Be Matte Lipstick in Cappuccino (full size) – another “not really an empty” it was in last October’s Ipsy bag. I liked the color, although I have not idea why one would call a darkish nude lipstick “cappuccino”, it wasn’t really brown. The problem was that it had that typical old lipstick smell. I used it a couple of times trying to convince myself that I’m imagining the smell. I should have complained to Ipsy to see if I could get a replacement, but somehow I never got around to that.

Hope you enjoyed this instalment of “Empties”. June and July will follow shortly!
