As you probably know, this month Birchbox allowed its subscribers to select a sample or a whole box. Given my previous experience with selection process, and then second guessing myself, and then being disappointed anyway, I decided to let the Birchbox decide for me this time. If I don’t like the results, at least can blame them and not my silly self. Also, I read somewhere a theory that you get better (or at least more interesting) box, if you don’t pick a sample. And I wanted to test that theory.
As a result I got 7 item box (yay for 70 points for reviews) that is well… interesting.
– Davines Oi Oil (deluxe sample) along with foil samples of Davines Oi shampoo and conditioner
– Dr. Jart+ BB Black Label Detox
– Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish Kit
– Pixi Shea Butter Lip Balm in Honey Nectar (full size!)
– Yu-Be Moisturizing Skin Cream
My first observation was that apparently if you don’t pick a sample, you can end up with two of the samples from the selection (Davines and Liz Earle). I’m not particularly exited about Davines, previous samples I got from this brand were not my favorite. Moreover, deluxe sample is oil, and oils don’t always work great with my hair. I like the idea of trying Liz Earle (and getting my hands on that muslin cloth), but I already got this sample when I got “Build Your Own Birchbox” in July. It’s still sitting in my stash waiting for it’s turn. Yu-Be cream is tiny and smells like camphor, but I’ll give it a chance. I’m pretty exited about are Pixi Balm and Dr. Jart+ BB cream. I was curious about both for some time now. Also, after swatching other shades of Pixi Balm at the Birchbox store, I realized that I lucked out and got the most flattering (for me) shade. Did I mention it was full size?
Bottom Line: When I first saw the list of samples I’m getting (I cheated and picked at the spoilers this time), I was a bit disappointed that I’m not getting Tocca hand cream and/or Temptu highlighter. However, all things considered it’s a lovely box. At least 6 out of 7 (Davines Oil may get traded or given away) items will get used, and that’s more than can be said about my other subscriptions this month.
